The air-cooled, two-valve powerplant has an 88 X 66mm bore/stroke with a claimed power output of 81 hp and 55.7 lb-ft. of torque. Besides being injected with the favorable traits of other Ducati Desmodue engines, the new Ducati mill also conforms to Euro 3 emission regulations. The smaller engine also helped shave 22 lbs. off the Hypermotard 1100. Assisting the weight reduction is a frame with less forged components and new upper and lower fork clamps.
